Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides).
Endemic to Australia, Tawny’s are masters of disguise, known for their exceptional camouflage, which makes them appear like a broken branch when they freeze with their heads upturned and eyes narrowed to slits, a behavior called "stumping". These nocturnal birds are often mistaken for owls but are not. The name "frogmouth" comes from their large, broad beak, which is used to capture insects, worms, and small prey.
I created this piece with the thought that the main Tawny is mum, Dad has gone into camouflage mode posing as a tree branch and the kids are all looking very intrigued!
