"Doryanthes excelsa"
The Gymea lily is a striking Australian native plant known for its large, sword-like leaves and towering flower stalks. They are incredibly resilient, thriving after bushfires and surviving periods of drought.
Gymea lilies can grow to impressive sizes. The sword-shaped leaves can reach 1-2.5 meters long and 10cm wide. The flower spike, emerging from the centre, can grow up to 6m tall. The flower head itself is about 30cm in diameter with bright red, trumpet-shaped flowers.
I live in Grays Point so i drive past many Gymea Lillies every day.
I found the flower arrangement very intricate and tricky to understand. But i was happy with my perseverance and the outcome.
Adding a cheeky rainbow lorikeet just made sense as they love feasting on the nectar.
"Flowers are the music of the ground. From earth's lips spoken without sound."
I created this artwork by using gouache paints and pan pastels.
