Glossy Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami)
One of Australia’s rarest and most specialised cockatoos, the Glossy Black-Cockatoo feeds almost exclusively on the seeds of she-oak (Allocasuarina) trees, a restricted diet that makes them vulnerable to habitat loss. Males have darker brownish-black heads, while females show yellow speckles and patches across the head and neck. Sadly, they are listed as Vulnerable in QLD and NSW due to land clearing, loss of feeding trees, and destruction of old hollow-bearing eucalypts needed for nesting. With fewer than several thousand left in the wild, they are among the most threatened cockatoos in Australia.
Created with pencil, watercolour, gouache and pastels on cold press 300gsm watercolour paper.
