Emu
Emu
Welcome to my quirky Emu.
After my day with the kids at Symbio Zoo I came home and drew this guy. I absolutely love drawing eyes so I had a field day with this one!!
Fun Facts time!!
An Emu has two eyelids. One eyelid is used for blinking, while other prevents dust and sand entering the eyes.
They are the second largest bird in the world. What's first? Well its the ostrich of course!
Female Emu birds are slightly larger than males. Once she has laid her large green eggs, the father will take over the incubation. At this stage she may walk away and never return (oh how rude!!). Sometimes she will find another partner and breed again (fancy that!!)Meanwhile the father is left to incubate the eggs.
In this time he will not leave to drink or eat. He does not leave the nest for two months.Emus can run at 50km per hour, they are not faster than the Eastern Grey Kangaroo who can run up to 71km per hour!!
An Emu has a low deep voice that is similar to a hollow drum.
They can also grunt and whistle.
They have three toes on each foot and their legs are strong and built for running and kicking predators when faced with danger.
Emu's are an omnivore (eats both plants and animals) and are excellent swimmers. They can easily cross the river while looking for food and new feeding areas. Emu can travel thousands of miles each year.
Absolutely amazing animals ……Hand drawn with just lead pencils. I used gouache paints for his eyes right at the end.
